OpenNETCF and SourceGear#

Have to give a huge thanks to Eric Sink of  SourceGear for donating licenses for Vault and Dragnet to the OpenNETCF team.  I have never used Vault or Dragnet  but I have been a reader of Eric's blog and his articles (which I recommend you read).  So far Vault and Dragnet are awesome.  Now that there is proper source control a lot more things can be done for the SDF and have a lot more users/developers get involved.

Check out the OpenNETCF.org news item for more details and Neil Cowburn's blog entry.

Again thanks Eric...I think everyone will agree with me that we are in a much happier place!

Vonage Canada Phone#

My vonage router (Vonage Canada) came yesterday and it's great.  I just plugged it into my hub, plugged in my phone and was making phone calls right away.  The only issue i have is I get a hissing sound on my end but people tell me they don't hear it on the other end.  The plan i got also gives a free fax line plus a ton of features not offered by Bell Canada and is a lot cheaper.  I recommend it if you don't already have a business phone number.

They are also running a refer a friend program so if anyone orders that i refer you will get one month free and I get two months free.  It only works if I email Vonage Canada and the person i'm refering to get credited appropriately (which makes no sense).  If you feel like giving me 2 free months let me know and I will email you and cc vonage.  If you don't feel like giving me two free months follow the link below and you can still get one free month for signing up.

Check out Neil's Call To Action With all the volunteer work that goes into the OpenNETCF.org Smart Device Framework (SDF) I think it's only appropriate that users help by donating what they can to help cover some of the costs to make the SDF available to everyone.  I'm sure it's saved a lot of late nights for many people and has helped many people save their jobs ;)

Here is the link to donate which is also available on www.opennetcf.org site.

Books on Software Patterns#

Anyone one have any suggestions for these types of books.  I am reading Patterns of Enterprise Architecture  (http://www.martinfowler.com/books.html) but I usually need two books to read because I get bored.  (Performance Testing .NET Web Apps was the second but my current gig I'm not doing web dev so currently it has no value).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My Nerd Score....#

Thanks to Bill Ryan for another test kind of along the same line as What OS are You.  I scored an 83 for my nerd score!!  I don't think i'm that bad even though I did take this test and writing about it at midnight!

I am nerdier than 83% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!
I am nerdier than 83% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!

Overall, you scored as follows:

16% scored higher,
1% scored the same, and
83% scored lower.

What does this mean? Your nerdiness is:

High-Level Nerd. You are definitely MIT material, apply now!!!.

Oh Canada!!#

The Canadian Junior hockey team finally broke the three year second place streak with a win tonight over Russia.  It's also the first championship since '97! The juniors completely dominated the tournament with no loses, 32 goals for and only 5 goals against.  Congrats go out to them!

Now if there is ever an NHL season (which don't think will happen) hopefully The Leafs can bring home Lord Stanley's Cup home...last time we won was '67 (38 years ago!!) and I wasn't even born yet!! BTW no offense to anyone who actually saw the Leafs win the last cup...it would just be nice to see that also :)

Well at least the Cup's permanent home is in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto :)

Tribute to my Grandfather#

My grandfather passed away last week at the age of 92.  I had mixed feelings about bloggin this but I decided I will.  He was a great man and lived with my family for most of my childhood.  He tought me a lot about life and respecting others and all of that has still stayed with me.  He was a hands on type of person and always wanting to take things apart and fix them, I guess that's where i got that from.  He would always help on the science projects, but sometimes common sense was not there...like making a steam boat that ran on gasoline.  It was an awesome project and worked but of course I was sent straight to the principals office when i arrived to class with a jar of gasline and a lighter :)  He always had the bags of chips for us.  He played for the Ecuador National Team and he tought us all the soccer skills we needed and it paid off by winning four consecutive championships (when we where around 10 years old :).  Even after we stopped playing he would still go out to the fields to teach the young kids some skills. Anyway, he lived a long happy life and he will be missed by all of my family and his friends.  Rest in peace “Papa Tarquino”

Books Completed#

Just finished reading two books on consulting both written by Alan Weiss (http://www.summitconsulting.com/).

  • Getting started in Consulting
  • Million Dollar Consulting

I think both books where good.  “Getting Started in Consulting” was a good intro.  I actually started reading “Million Dollar Consulting” first because of the title (I was sold by the “Million Dollar“ in the title) but he kept making references to the “Getting Started in Consulting” so I read the first one.  The first couple of chapters where pretty slow, talked about how to start up and what you need.  Already did all that so that was a quick read.  Later on he offers some great tips on building a consulting practice like offering value based services (fixed cost) instead of Time and Materials and how you can actually make more money from value based fees than T&M fees.  I have yet to prove that :(  Also provides tips on networking, how to sell to the C-Level people, and writing a proposal that always gets accepted.  Million Dollar Consulting builds on the first book and goes into more detail on the proposals and how to get the right information when going to a discovery meeting.   He has a bunch of other books available like How to write a Proposal that's Accepted Every Time ($150!!!) and Money Talks:How to Make a Million as a Speaker.   He also has a free articles section which has some other useful tips.  One of the best tips he gives is balance life and work and your life should always come first....but...if I ever make a million dollars I will definitely be buying myself a Bentley just like him!!

If you are an independent and want to look at ways at getting better contracts (other than getting them through recruiters) I would recommend his books.  One thing I have realised is I have to get out of my techie mentality and more into a business mentality.  It's also a big marketing and strategy game and how people/potential customers perceive you and your knowledge.

Anyway...Next books on the table:

  • Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture
  • Performance Testing .NET Web Applications

GZip Compression & Compact Framework#

Here are some utils methods to compress/decompress byte data in gzip format.  Couldn't really find many examples to inflate (decompress) the byte data after it's been compressed...maybe i just didn't Google hard enought ;-).  Pretty cool library...especaily when you reduce a bitmap 80-90%!!

Note: This is only a wrapper to the main SharpZipLib library available at http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/SharpZipLib/Default.aspx so you will need that library for the utils to work.

        /// <summary>
        /// Compress the raw data using gzip compression
        /// </summary>
        /// <param name="rawData"></param>
        /// <returns></returns>
        public static byte[] DeflateData(byte[] data)
        {
            MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream();
            GZipOutputStream gzipOut = new GZipOutputStream(stream);
            gzipOut.Write(data,0,data.Length);
            gzipOut.Finish();
            return stream.ToArray();
        }

        /// <summary>
        /// Decompress the data using gzip compression
        /// </summary>
        /// <param name="data"></param>
        /// <returns></returns>
        public static byte[] InflateData(byte[] data)
        {
            MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream();
            ms.Write(data,0,data.Length);
            ms.Seek(0,SeekOrigin.Begin);
            Stream gzin = new GZipInputStream(ms);
            MemoryStream decompMemStream = new MemoryStream();
            int size = 2048;
            byte[] buffer = new byte[size];
            while(size>0)
            {
                size = gzin.Read(buffer, 0, size);
                if (size > 0)
                    decompMemStream.Write(buffer, 0, size);
            }

            return decompMemStream.ToArray();
        }

Falsely Skilled Developers#

Bill Ryan comments about a post on breeding falsely skilled developers.  This day and age it's so true.  Just look at what VS.Net 2005 does for you.  I think it's great but I also look into what it's creating and try to understand it.  Now it's all about “auto generated code” and “cut & paste”.  Wonder if there's a website called cutandpastecoders.com...just did a quick whois and it's available!! Probably get a ton of hits this day and age :)

Check out my other comments on his site
