The $1.5Billion Dollar CIO#

There's an interesting article on Shaygan Kheradpir the CIO of Verizon and basically how he runs a 7,000 person IT Team with a budget of $1.5Billion.  It mentions the project I'm working on (Verizon One) and how it came about.  Goes through a typical meeting with him and his meetings are straight to the point.  He doesn't like hearing the Marketing BS but just wants to know whats happening (and I can vouch for that)  Cool thing about him is he can get his hands dirty in code and help debug code and a lot of the Verizon directors do the same.  Cool company to work with but there are a lot of hours when ready to go live but that's expected in the software world!

Bell Canada Enter VOIP Market#

Looks like Bell canada has ended three month voip trials and is starting their new voip service in the Quebec area.  Looks like VOIP is a big strategy within Bell with them recently signing a wVIOP deal.  Good news is now we have 3 providers (as far as I know) Vonage Canada (my current provider), Primus, and now Bell.  Bad news is CRTC is now looking into how to regulate VOIP service.  Last time their ruling was “they do not regulate the internet“ but I guess now they think differently. If they do regulate VOIP it will probably mean prices go up but will also mean (hopefully) that the providers have to maintain a certain level of reliability with the service.

RIMs new Developer Platform#

Looks like RIM has announced a new developer platform called BlackBerry Mobile Data Systems (MDS) 4.1.  It's based on Java and uses Web Services (SOA) on their Enterprise Server to connect applications.  MDS is a visual IDE and has application deployment and management built in.  Good thing is since it's based on WS it should be able to connect to Windows Mobile based devices as well as Java based devices.
