WebBrowser Control Part III#

I previously posted about the WebBrowser control in two parts.  Part one here and part two here both having to do with Windows Mobile devices.  On my current project we had a requirment to display some rich formated text so I figured why not use a browser control instead of the RichTextBox control.  On the full framework there is no 'default control' that loads up in the toolbox for web a web browser control, but if you add "shdocvw.dll" (found under Windows\System32) to your toolbox controls you get the Microsoft Web Browser ActiveX control.  Now all you have to do is drop the control in your form and you have a web browser.  Man desktop developers have it too easy!!

Designing Pocket PC Applications for Stylus-Free Usage - Sample Application#

I have been asked a few times for the source code that accompanies my latest article so here it is.  It's for .NET CF V2 and Visual Studio 2005.  Also, here is a link to the article so you can view in fulll screen instead of the small frame.

New Project#

Well I'm on a new project now for iViewSystems based in Mississauga, Ontario since my Verizon contract has ended.  Can't really talk about the project I'm working on but I'm not working on their core products; which are pretty cool by the way.  Will be leading a team of five developers on this project which includes both desktop and mobile applications.  At the end we will have a commercial product which will be launched at the International Casino Exhibition in Earls Court, London England.

The core products are installed in various casinos around the world and handles incident reporting and management.  One of the cooler products is the Facial Recognition product that can spot banned players from the casino and notifies appropriate staff.  Reminds me of the scene in the movie Casino when they catch some guy cheating (listen here).  Here are some more audio clips from the movie.

Flash Player for PPC $499?!?#

Just saw that the Macromedia standalone Flash Player for Pocket PC is now $499US.  Strange move if you ask me.  Why would you charge for a player or viewer, it's like Microsoft wanting to charge for their PowerPoint Viewer.  Users are just viewing the thing and nothing else.  Probably give developers compelling reasons to drop Flash.  Don't know if it is included with Flash Professional 8 or what the license says in terms of re-distributing the player but it's a really strange move if you ask me!

Note the player for a Mobile IE (or Pocket IE) which is an ActiveX control is still available for free...it's just the stand alone player that can go full screen that is not.

.NET CF V2 Gets Sign Off#

On Sept 28 Compact Framework Version 2 was signed off by QA at Microsoft.  Take a look at Mike Zintel's post on what has been happening for the last three years and why.

Another product that went gold in September  is Age of the Empires III.  Can't wait to play this game.  I know I will have many wasted nights...but we all need some R&R every now and then!!

Verizon One Contract#

Well my contract at Verizon for the Verizon One project has ended.  It was a great two years and the last year I was given the chance to work from my home office in Oakville, Ontario.  We took the product from proof of concept all the way to production within two years.  The Verizon One phone was even used at the 2005 HBO Emmy party with a special build on it and featured on Entertainment Tonight.  (No video or web links to these yet.  Hopefully I will get some)

For those who don't know what Verizon One is here is a picture:

It combines a DSL modem and wireless router with a touch-screen computer and cordless telephone. It's configured for iobi service but also works in stand alone mode without the service.  It is basically a PSTN phone on steroids running Windows CE and a combination of .NET Compact Framework and C++.  Some features include:

  • Call with one click from their address book or online directory assistance
  • View information such as weather, movie show times or news
  • Scroll through Verizon SuperPages.com to look up and call phone numbers
  • View maps and driving instructions
  • Use a memo pad to leave notes for the family
  • Manage calls as they are received
  • Use voice mail more efficiently
  • Forward calls in real time, or on a pre-set schedule
  • Manage contact lists and calendars
  • Restaurant and Movie Listings

Check out the tour on the Verizon site to find out more features.

There was a launch party for the Verizon One phone but unfortunately it was in Dallas a few months back and I was unable to attend.  Here is an image of the cake for the launch party.

And here is one of the first booths in a Verizon store.

It was a good run and good luck to the Verizon One Development team!!  Now on to the next project...more on that in a later post.
